Poll lead for coalition in WA

The Barnett government is in a strong position ahead of the West Australian election campaign, with a poll showing the coalition enjoying the support of 58 per cent of the electorate.

A Newspoll, taken between October and December, shows the coalition has an election-winning 58-42 two-party-preferred lead over Labor, The Australian reported on Monday.

In terms of primary support, Labor remains unchanged from the previous three-month polling period at 30 per cent, while the coalition commands 49 per cent of the vote.

The Newspoll also found that 48 per cent believe Premier Colin Barnett would make a better premier, compared to just 29 per cent who favour Opposition Leader Mark McGowan.

Twenty three per cent of respondents were uncommitted.

The state election will be held on March 9.
