Australia's A-List has lit up downtown Los Angeles, with Hugh Jackman clutching an oversize Foster's beer can, Elle Macpherson looking anything but 50 and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban reminiscing about the moment they met.

It was at a G'Day USA black tie gala exactly eight years ago Kidman and Urban were introduced to each other.

A spark flared, love blossomed, a wedding followed and now the Australian power couple has two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

"As we kissed our daughters goodbye when we headed out tonight we kind of went 'Wow, it's amazing how life plays out'," Kidman told AAP.

"Look what happened from that chance meeting. We now have a two-year-old and a four-year-old who are waving us bye."

On the red carpet a crew from Ellen DeGeneres' TV talk show slipped Jackman a Foster's beer can and Jackman, a red hot favourite for a Golden Globe win on Monday AEDT, was a happy man.

Organisers of G'Day USA, a festival designed to promote Australian food, wine, tourism, business, entertainment and other sectors to Americans, were also celebrating a milestone, with the festival reaching its 10th anniversary.

Each year three Australians are honoured at the black tie gala, and to mark the 10th anniversary most of the past honorees - including Jackman, Kidman, Urban, Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts, Olivia Newton-John, Simon Baker, Jacki Weaver and basketballer Luc Longley - turned up for the $US500 per seat event inside the JW Marriott Hotel ballroom.

This year Paul Hogan and Rose Byrne were honoured.

"Girt by sea. Does anyone know what that means?" Hogan, making fun of the Australian anthem, said during his speech on stage.

"It sounds like some scrubber that hangs around the waterfront." John Travolta was also honoured as an Australian goodwill ambassador.

Supermodel Macpherson, who turns 50 in March, shared master of ceremony duties with Nine Network's Richard Wilkins, while the most nervous person in the building was celebrity chef Curtis Stone who was in charge of cooking the menu for the 1100 guests.

"I'm terrified," Stone said. "When you are doing a number like 1100 you have to worry about two things: It tastes good and it is hot.

"There's 70 or 80 chefs in the kitchen and most of them I just met.

"It's a stressful bloody day."
