Two fugitive pigs that have been causing havoc on Darwin's roads have been shot by police.

Three pet pigs have had police and council workers chasing their tails for days, running onto roads and a local golf course.

One pig returned home voluntarily this morning but its two siblings remained on the run.

The days-long saga has now reached a close, with officers shooting the two animals at Darwin's Bagot Aboriginal Community.

Just before the pigs were shot, state Senator Nigel Scullion to catch the pigs.

"They should have used a bit of some mashed sweet corn, molasses and half a bottle of rum," he said.

"They're big eaters and they obviously don't mind a tipple.

"And look that's the safest and the most humane way to deal with them, is to just give them a bit of a drink."

The animals' owner, Vivienne White, who lives at the Minmarama Aboriginal Community, earlier said she would seek to return the pigs to the wild if they were re-captured.
