Maine lawmakers get answers about curtailment
AUGUSTA, Maine (
AP) — The Maine Legislature's Appropriations Committee is getting an update on Gov.
Paul LePage's curtailment order aimed at balancing the books through the end of the fiscal year.
Finance Commissioner Sawin Millett was asked questions by Democrats last week and he's returning Thursday with answers about the $35.5 million in cutbacks.
LePage's curtailment order for the fiscal year that ends June 30 could be modified by lawmakers before they face their next big fiscal test, passing a budget for the next two years.
On Friday, the governor is expected to release a supplemental budget as well as the two-year budget, which will address a projected shortfall of about $130 million. They also need to find tens of millions of dollars more to cover cost overruns for social services.
