A pilot killed in northern Tasmania crashed his ultra-light plane into his brother's vineyard.

A 65-year-old man died on impact when the plane nosedived after taking off from a private airstrip on the property next door, local media reported.

Tasmania Police believe the experienced pilot was on a recreational flight and say the cause of the crash is unknown.

The man was the only occupant of the aircraft.

Police were called to the crash at York Town, north of Beaconsfield, at 10.10am (AEDT) on Friday.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
