A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Victoria over the murder of a man in Keith, in South Australia's southeast.

The body of Navarone Hutchins, 23, was found on a dirt track about five kilometres from the town on Tuesday after he went missing from his nearby home last week.

Police say he suffered serious head injuries.

On Wednesday night, Victorian detectives arrested a man from Keith in Robinvale, in northern Victoria, in relation to Mr Hutchins' murder.

He is currently being held in Mildura and South Australian detectives will seek his extradition over the next few days.

Police say the investigation is continuing and detectives will remain in Keith on Thursday to interview friends and associates of Mr Hutchins in a bid to piece together the circumstances of his murder.

Mr Hutchins was last seen on Friday night after leaving a property in Keith to head to the local hotel.

Detective Inspector Mark Trenwith said Mr Hutchins was a popular local man with no criminal history.

"This is a particularly violent crime and we are most concerned about it," he said on Wednesday.
