Fire crews are battling to get on top of the Kentbruck blaze in Victoria's southwest before forecast severe fire danger conditions on Friday.

The blaze began in Kentbruck last Friday and is still covering more than 6500 hectares, including 1150 hectares of a blue gum and pine plantation.

Country Fire Authority operations officer David Harris said about 600 firefighters were at the blaze and more could be sent on Friday.

He said fire crews hoped to use milder conditions on Wednesday and Thursday to get the upper hand.

"Crews have been working today to establish a good perimeter around the fire to prevent it spreading," he told AAP.

"We will work on it overnight and also tomorrow because Friday we are expecting severe fire danger across the whole western part of Victoria.

"If it does make a run on Friday it could particularly put some pressure on the towns that are surrounding the fire."

Residents in the following nearby towns were urged to be vigilant: Mumbannar, Drik Drik, Kentbruck, Mount Richmond, Nelson, Wade Junction, Wanwin and also around the Cobboboonee National Park, Discovery Bay National Park and Lower Glenelg National Park.

An information point for local residents will be operating on Friday at the Dartmoor General Store in the Rural Transaction Centre between 11am and 1pm (AEDT).

A community meeting will be held at Gorae West Public Hall at 7pm on Wednesday, as well as another meeting on Thursday at 11am at the Dartmoor Community Hall.
