HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — United Technologies Corp. said Tuesday that airplane manufacturer Embraer will use an engine made by United Technologies' Pratt & Whitney division in the second generation of the E-Jet aircraft family.

United Technologies said Embraer chose Pratt & Whitney's PurePower Geared Turbofan engine for its E-jet. The planes are expected to go into service in 2018, and United Technologies said they will use significantly less fuel, emit less pollution, make less noise and cost less to operate than current aircraft. United Technologies said four other aircraft manufacturers have agreed to use the PurePower engine.

The engine has gears that allow different parts of it to operate at different speeds, boosting fuel efficiency.

Embraer is based in Brazil. The company describes itself as the world's largest manufacturer of commercial jets with up to 120 seats.

United Technologies said the Embraer deal won't affect its 2013 guidance. The company still expects to earn $5.85 to $6.15 per share for the year on $64 billion to $65 billion in revenue.

Analysts forecast income of $6.06 per share on $65.11 billion in revenue, according to FactSet.

Shares of United Technologies lost $1.02 to close at $83.55.
