Yass Shire Mayor Rowena Abbey is putting on a brave face while her own home is in the line of a bushfire.

Cr Abbey briefed NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell on the latest from the Cobbler's Road fire, near the southern NSW town, on Wednesday.

The fire has burned through more than 1700 hectares and destroyed one home.

Cr Abbey joined the premier for a tour of affected areas in her community as fire crews begin mop-up operations in some parts.

The fire changed direction on Wednesday morning putting the mayor's property at risk along with scores of others.

"I had zero sleep last night," she told reporters, adding she was on the hunt for a double-shot coffee.

"The way the fire was burning you could see it in the distance and the smoke coming through."

Additional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter bombers have been deployed to fight the fire.

Cr Abbey expects huge livestock losses, mostly sheep.

Mr O'Farrell is visiting the Yass and nearby Bookham areas with Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.

Later they will visit the Wagga Wagga area.
