A Perth Coroner has found the death of a 33-year-old diabetic in the East Perth Watch House was a result of natural causes.

The man, who for cultural reasons is known as Mr Woods, died in March 2010 while he was in custody for breaching violence restraining orders.

He was taken to hospital twice in the 24 hours he was at the watch house and both times assessed as being medically fit to be detained.

The Coroner Alastair Hope found officers also regularly checked on his condition while he was being detained.

Mr Hope says it is likely that Mr Woods died after self-administering insulin, which is likely to have caused his blood sugar level to drop dramatically.

He says Mr Woods had several heart conditions and is likely to have died from cardiac arrest.
