Qld cops could be forced out: Seeney

Laws could be changed to force Queensland police out of their jobs if too few accept voluntary redundancies.

Up to 110 commissioned officers and up to 212 staff will be offered redundancies under a police service restructure designed to boost frontline policing and cut bureaucracy.

Under current laws, police cannot be forced to accept redundancies.

But Acting Premier Jeff Seeney says the government will consider changing legislation if too few officers opt to leave.

"We will support the new commissioner (Ian Stewart) wholeheartedly in whatever he requests in his efforts to ensure more police resources are allocated to providing frontline services," he told reporters in Brisbane.

The restructure has angered unions, who say job security is one of the most attractive aspects of police work.

Queensland Police Commissioned Officers' Union of Employees president Superintendent John Pointing said there was a "palpable sense of betrayal" among officers who had banked on their steady jobs to support families and pay mortgages.

"In many ways, this is a catastrophic day for Queensland police," he said on Monday.

The restructure will also see the state's eight police regions cut to five, resulting in three assistant commissioner roles in Cairns, Maroochydore and Mt Gravatt being axed.

Queensland's public sector union, Together, said the changes would hurt regional areas.

"Local families, industries and businesses at Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands, Maroochydore and Mount Gravatt require local assistant commissioners to make local decisions about local policing," secretary Alex Scott said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The Newman government either does not know or does not understand the differences between the Brisbane City Council and Queensland."

The restructure is expected to be in effect by July 1.
