STORYLINE:

17-YEAR-OLD DEREK SHROUT HAS BEEN JAILED ON ASSAULT CHARGES AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY PLOTTED A TERROR ATTACK INVOLVING BOMBS AT HIS HIGH SCHOOL.

THE TEEN WAS APPREHENDED AFTER A JOURNAL WAS FOUND BY A TEACHER AND TURNED OVER TO AUTHORITIES.

THAT'S ACCORDING TO THE LOCAL SHERIFF, WHO SAYS THE JOURNAL CONTAINED SEVERAL PLANS THAT LOOKED LIKE POTENTIAL TERRORIST ATTACKS."

BUT SHROUT'S ATTORNEY DISAGREES.

SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Armstrong/Defense Attorney

"he had no intentions....after talking to my client...intending to hurt anyone...i think this might have been blown out of proportion in light of what happened in Newtown, Connecticut. Of course, everyone is on edge about that kind of thing."

THE SHERIFF SAYS A SEARCH OF SHROUT'S HOME FOUND SEVERAL TOBACCO CANS CONTAINING PELLETS.

HE SAID THE DEVICES WERE "JUST A STEP OR TWO AWAY FROM BEING READY TO EXPLODE."
