Two 14-year-old girls punched a man in the head and burned his face with a cigarette during an attempted robbery on a Sydney train, police allege.

They say the 33-year-old boarded a city-bound train at Seven Hills just before 10pm (AEDT) on Monday, while two men and the teenaged girls boarded the same train at Toongabbie.

The two men approached the 33-year-old and held his arms while a 14-year-old girl from Seven Hills allegedly burnt his head using a lit cigarette.

She's also accused of repeatedly punching him in the head, and was allegedly joined in the attack by another 14-year-old girl from Newtown.

They allegedly demanded money but the man refused.

During the assault the train arrived at Parramatta station, where transit officers noticed the attack and arrested the two teenagers.

They have been charged with attempted aggravated robbery and refused bail to appear in Parramatta Children's Court on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old man didn't require medical treatment, police said.
