Stingers not detering Fraser Island tourists

Tourism authorities say the outbreak of marine stingers near Fraser Island off south-east Queensland is an isolated incident and is not deterring visitors.

Seven people, including four children, have been hospitalised this week with suspected irukandji stings after swimming on the western side of the island.

An eight-year-old Gold Coast girl was flown to Hervey Bay Hospital yesterday afternoon, after being stung at Awinya Creek.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) says it will not close any beaches on the island.

The QPWS says signs have been erected warning people of the dangers of marine stingers.

Marine experts say it is rare for the species to be found so far south.

Tourism Fraser Coast general manager Pip Close says tourist numbers have remained strong despite the stinger concerns.

"We haven't received any calls or enquiries on it, so I just think it's unfortunate it's happened," she said.

"It's one of those things that they do occasionally appear as the water perhaps warms up.

"I don' think its affecting tourists at this stage and certainly we haven't had any enquiries on it."

Ms Close says future outbreaks have the potential to devastate the local tourism industry.

"We would hope they won't come this far south and becomes an issue for us," she said.

"Certainly something that far-north Queensland has to deal with and it does impact their market in terms of swimming in the sea.

"It's not something that we've got on our radar long-term, so hoping it won't become a thing of the future."
