[VOICE-OVER]

IN THE UNITED STATES, SOME MAJOR GUN COMPANIES CAN'T MAKE FIRE ARMS FAST ENOUGH

FOR RETAILERS, BUSINESS IS STEADY AND STRONG AND INSIDE THE SANDY SPRINGS GUN CLUB THE FIRING RANGE HAS A WAITING LIST

[NAT-BREAK]

[SOT:ROBYN MARZULLO , CO-OWNER, SANDY SPRINGS GUN CLUB AND RANGE]

"It's a sport, and so I think it's becoming more popular as a sport and the industry itself is becoming more popular"

[VOICE-OVER]

FOR MANY, IT IS SPORT, FOR OTHERS, A FEAR THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL BAN THEM

[SOT: WARREN MARSHALL / G & G GUN SHOP]

"We cant get enough guns in because people are just buying them all up."

[NAT-BREAK]

[VOICE-OVER]

ACCORDING TO RECENT FBI DATA ANALYZED BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THERE IS A SURGE IN BACKGROUND CHECKS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, THE BIGGEST FOUND IN THE SOUTH AND WEST FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO CARRY OR BUY GUNS.

[SOT:ROBYN MARZULLO , CO-OWNER, SANDY SPRINGS GUN CLUB AND RANGE]

"I think the spike has been from the fear of the unkown. People want the option of being able to protect themselves and the gun market right now is so volatile that people are doing whatever they can so that if anything change they have what they need to protect themselves.

[VOICE-OVER]

WHERE SCENES OF DEADLY MASS SHOOTINGS STILL HAUNT COMMUNITIES, LIKE IN COLORADO AND CONNECTICUT, BACKGROUND CHECKS STILL SHOWED AN INCREASE, BUT NOT LIKE THE UPTICK IN MOST OTHER STATES.

[SOT: LINDA BAULSIR / CONNECTICUT RESIDENT]

"I think that the people who are buying guns to protect themselves are somewhat off the wall. If they are hunters, I agree, they should have guns but I think they should have the kind that we had during the revolution, muskets"

[NAT-BREAK]

[VOICE-OVER]

IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA, THE FBI PROCESSED ALMOST 38,000 REQUESTS IN OCTOBER.

IN DECEMBER...NEARLY 80,000.

SOME OF THE INCREASE IS LIKELY ATTRIBUTED TO HOLIDAY SALES THOUGH AFTER A MASS SHOOTING, LIKE IN NEWTOWN, LAWMAKERS OFTEN RALLY AROUND GUN CONTROL, MAKING MANY PEOPLE FEAR LEGISLATION.

[SOT:ROBYN MARZULLO , CO-OWNER, SANDY SPRINGS GUN CLUB AND RANGE]

"The lawmakers should talk to gun range owners and gun manufactures and see what we can do as a team together to help make our country a safer place. I don't think that banning certain fire arms is going to be what changes that"

[NAT-BREAK]

AND IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE NEWTOWN MASSACRE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA HAS SAID THAT NEW GUN LAWS WOULD BE A TOP PRIORTY

IN THE MEANTIME THE GUN INDUSTRY IS THRIVING AND THE FBI IS CHECKING MORE BACKGROUNDS THAN EVER BEFORE
