The Northern Territory Government has ruled out building new court houses for bush sittings in remote communities.

The Territory's Chief Magistrate Hillary Hannam has lashed out at the state of bush courts, threatening to cancel sittings in some areas unless the standards of the buildings improve.

Attorney General John Elferink says the Government is working to find alternative buildings.

"She has a point, some of those buildings are pretty tired," Mr Elferink said.

"But the point is that the Government will not build purpose-built court houses in remote communities, which are buildings which will be used once a month at best.

"So the circuit court as a general rule has to find some other accommodation, often in police stations has been the tradition, sometimes in other community buildings."
