The wife of East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao is expected to remain in Australia after having surgery for breast cancer.

Kirsty Sword Gusmao underwent surgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne on Friday.

The 46-year-old had received an early diagnosis for breast cancer while visiting family in Melbourne with her three sons.

Mrs Sword Gusmao's representative in Australia says the surgery went as well as can be hoped for at this stage and she'll meet with doctors during the week to discuss ongoing treatment.

Xanana Gusmao flew to Australia to support his family.

The prime minister and and his wife have indicated they are positive about the early diagnosis and treatment.
