Thousands of people have lined Northbourne Avenue in Canberra for the first major event of the Summernats car festival.

About 200 vehicles cruised between Exhibition Park (EPIC) and Civic to launch the car festival for 2013.

Summernats organiser Andy Lopez expects more than 80,000 people to attend events over the next four days.

"All our indications are showing this is going to be a really good year for Summernats, which will then mean a great year for business in Canberra for our event," he said.

"We've got record number of entrants so we've gone from 1,500 entrants in Summernats 25 up to over 1,700 for this year.

"Which is a fantastic vote of confidence from the street machine community about the event."

Mr Lopez says last year's parade attracted 20,000 spectators.

"We put it on at midday so people can come down from their offices and watch," he said.

"Also it's for families who might want to come into town and have a look it's not a bad time either."
