The Townsville council will do a review of the Magnetic Island road system after the Federal Government gave the green light for a new waste transfer facility at Cockle Bay.

Councillor Ray Gartrell says the State Government will review the concept but is confident the move from the current Picnic Bay landfill site will meet environmental standards.

Councillor Gartrell says the current Picnic Bay landfill is running out of room and planning for the the new facility is underway.

He says council will need to upgrade roads near the new facility to ensure waste can be transported by truck safely.

"Obviously there needs to be a review of our traffic management plan there and roads will need to be built in the appropriate timeframe," he said.

"There will be significant investment in the road network in that area to get to get into that particular area."

He says the State Government will now review the Cockle Bay site with a view to construction starting in the next two years.

"We think there's five years left and we're looking at implementing that transfer station at Cockle Bay," he said.

"It'll probably be the 2015-16 financial year.

"If there was any unforseen circumstances that would shorten of the lifespan of the Picnic Bay landfill."
