A cabbie was left with a dislocated jaw after an attack in Sydney's east on Wednesday.

Police say the 34-year-old taxi driver picked up a male passenger outside a Double Bay hotel about 11.45pm (AEDT) on Wednesday and drove him to Poulet Street at Matraville.

The pair became involved in a dispute which resulted in the cabbie being knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked in the head and body.

The offender fled the scene.

The taxi driver went to Maroubra Police Station to report the incident and was then taken to Prince of Wales Hospital where he was treated for a dislocated jaw, lacerations and facial bruising.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

The taxi has been seized for forensic examination.
