The death of a baby boy after a home birth in Adelaide is being investigated.

Police said the boy died in hospital on New Year's Eve after being born at a northern suburbs property on December 30.

A report is being prepared for the state coroner.

The death follows a major coronial investigation in South Australia last year that examined the circumstances surrounding the deaths of three babies in separate home births.

Deputy Coroner Anthony Schapel found that all three babies would have survived if they had been born in hospital by caesarean section.

Mr Schapel recommended more education for people considering home births and legislative changes to make it an offence for people to operate as unregistered midwives.
