A man has died after his car hit a stobie pole at Rosewater in Adelaide's western suburbs on Wednesday evening.

Police say the man was driving on Jenkins Street when his station wagon crashed into the car in front and then slid into a tree and a stobie pole about 6:15pm.

The 35-year-old from Semaphore Park died at the scene.

The driver of the other car received minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.

Police say it is the sixth death in South Australia during the national holiday road toll period which runs from December 23 until midnight tonight.

The man has become the first person killed on South Australian roads this year after 93 people died in crashes last year, a record low.

There were no road deaths in the state at the same time last year.
