The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) has confirmed the death of an Australian man in Thailand.

Local media on the island of Phuket say the 21-year-old Victorian fell from the balcony of a four-star resort on New Year's Day.

Thai police reportedly allege the Australian had been drunk for two days, but the circumstances of his death are not known at this stage.

The man had been travelling with friends, who are said to be helping Thai authorities with their inquiries.

DFAT says consular officials are assisting the man's family.
