West Australian police have charged a 35-year-old man over a fatal hit-and-run in the early hours of New Year's Day.

A 17-year-old boy died after being hit by a car on Ennis Avenue in the Perth suburb of Waikiki around 4:30am (AWST) yesterday.

The man alleged to be the driver of the car has been charged with failing to stop and failing to report an accident.

He has also been charged with creating a false belief for allegedly reporting his car had been stolen after the incident.

He is due to appear in court in Rockingham later this month.
