New Jericho airstrip a 'Godsend' for cancer patient

The resealing of Jericho's airstrip in outback Queensland has provided much needed comfort for one cancer patient in the town, east of Longreach.

George Plaisted was diagnosed with bowel cancer and must travel to Rockhampton once a week for chemotherapy.

Mr Plaisted was the first person to take off on the newly resealed Jericho airstrip late last month for his treatment.

His wife Carolyn Plaisted says before the airstrip was resealed the pair was forced to find other means of transportation.

She says the new Jericho airstrip is a 'Godsend' for her family.

"Apart from the expense of driving down and staying in Rocky, we've been very fortunate because I can't drive those distances," she said.

"We tried going on the train on Thursday and coming back by bus on Saturday, but that means it was a long and uncomfortable trip for George after his chemo."

She says with the airstrip resealed her husband can travel free by Angel Flight to Rockhampton and back within a day.

"He normally needs to have a rest after his treatment, so it only takes roughly an hour-and-a-half - sometimes a little bit less - each way," she said.

"By the time he comes home, he can have his rest - he hasn't got the additional stress.

"To have this [airstrip] sealed has just made life so much easier for us."
