Parking fees on the rise

The ACT Government has again increased parking fees to encourage greater use of public transport.

The new year saw fees rise by $2 in Civic, with increases also taking place across all government-owned carparks.

City planning executive director Dr Erin Brady says the Government has been working to improve real-time information systems for bus users.

"The ACT Government is building a network of park-and-ride facilities to give people who park in these areas the option of mixing car use with bus use," she said.

"Significant investments have also been made to existing infrastructure such as bus lane extensions on the Belconnen-to-city corridor."

The last price rise was in July 2012, when prices jumped by $1.50.

"Despite this increase, Canberra still has the cheapest city centre parking (day rate) of any major Australian city," Dr Brady said.
