An eight-year-old girl died when a car being driven by her mother hit a tree at York, east of Perth, in the early hours of this morning.

The girl was a passenger in a car that left Great Southern Highway and hit a tree just after midnight.

She was airlifted to Perth with her mother and a two-year-old sibling but died a short time later.

Police are also trying to determine if a man found dead in Waikiki, south of Perth, is the victim of a hit and run.

His body was found on Ennis Avenue around 4:30am.
