Queenslanders have welcomed the new year with noisy all-night parties, wild celebrations and a number of dazzling fireworks displays.

Police say they were busy all night with minor incidents and noise complaints, but overall they were generally happy with revellers' behaviour across Queensland.

The biggest party in Queensland was at South Bank in Brisbane, with two fireworks shows and for the first time, a spectacular laser event.

Bags were searched on entry to South Bank to ensure the celebrations were alcohol-free and as usual everyone had a new year's resolution.

Businesses were catering for 80,000 to 100,000 people, but police say crowd numbers were like 65,000 this year.

On the Gold Coast, organisers went all-out with nine fireworks shows by the beach.

Large crowds also gathered on the Sunshine Coast.

Further north at Townsville and Mackay, the rain forced organisers to cancel some outdoor activities but fortunately the fireworks were waterproof and the celebrations went ahead.

As usual, everyone had a new year's resolution about health, fitness and romance.
