New year's eve celebrations in Mount Isa in north-west Queensland will also mark the city's 90th anniversary, when ore was first discovered by John Campbell Miles.

There will be two sets of fireworks and family friendly entertainment in the city.

Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady says a mining town marking 90 years is a reason to celebrate.

"For a mining community to be able to celebrate it's 90th birthday is certainly unique," he said.

"Most mining communities don't live 90 years and the message we're getting out is that we're 90-years-old and we have many, many more years to come so it is time to celebrate."
