Northern Territory Police are encouraging people to enjoy themselves during New Year celebrations but warn they will be out in force right across the Territory.

Police say they will have all their resources on deck for New Year's Eve to discourage anti-social or dangerous behaviour.

Mounted and water police, dog operations and even the air wing will join the usual city-safe patrols across the major centres of the Territory.

Police warn there will be random breath-testing stations at Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

In Darwin, Mitchell Street will be closed to all traffic between Peel and Knuckey streets from 6pm today until 7am tomorrow.

A mobile station will also be set up in Mitchell Street for the duration of the festivities.

In Alice Springs, police say they are targeting drink driving and anti-social behaviour.

Sergeant Conan Robertson is asking partygoers to show some restraint.

He says there will be a lot of police out and about, making sure celebrations don't get out of control.

"We will be continuing to target takeaway liquor outlets ... as well as putting out facilities like the mobile police station at tactical locations to try and ensure that people do the right thing," he said.

"We are not the fun police, we're not trying to stop people having a good time.

"We are just really trying to stop the good times deteriorating, and people ending up getting hurt."
