Police are still working to identify the body of a man killed when his car crashed into a tree in Jarrahdale on Saturday night.

The four-wheel-drive came off the road on Albany Highway about 11pm (WST) and burst into flames after hitting the tree.

The fire spread, forcing the closure of the highway for several hours.

It was thought that ammunition inside the vehicle had contributed to the fire, but police say it now appears the ammunition had been disposed of at the scene prior to the crash.

Police are asking for anyone who may have been in the area about the time of the crash to come forward and assist their investigation.
