1. SOUNDBITE: William Hochul/US Attorney

"today we're all here to announce the arrest and the filing of formal charges against the person who purchased that weapon and that shotgun found next to william spengler. Specifically we have today arrested dawn nguyen, age 24, who used to be the neighbor of spengler on lake road in webster. The precise charge against dawn nguyen has to do with lying during her purchase of these two weapons. According to the publicly filed complaint, dawn nguyen told the seller of these guns that she was to be the true owner and buyer of the guns instead of william spengler. It is absolutely against federal law to provide any materially false information relating to the acquisition of firearms. Providing your own name when buying a firearms instead of the true owner's name is sometimes referred to as acting as a straw purchaser. And that it is exactly what today's complaint alleges. William spengler, as a convicted felon, couldn't legally own, acquire or purchase any firearms whatsover. Congress specifically passed a law requiring people to provide the true owner to precisely stop what spengler in fact did this past christmas eve."

STORYLINE:

State and federal authorities have charged a 24-year-old woman in connection with the guns used in the Christmas Eve ambush slaying of two volunteer firefighters responding to a house fire in upstate New York.

U. S. Attorney William Hochul (HOH'-kuhl) says Dawn Nguyen (new-WHEN') of Rochester faces federal charges of knowingly making a false statement.

She was hit earlier Friday with a state charge of filing a falsified business record.

State Police Senior Investigator James Sewell says the charges are connected to the purchase of an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun that William Spengler had with him Monday when firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were gunned down.

Three other people were wounded before the 62-year-old Spengler killed himself.

Reached by The Associated Press before her arrest, Nguyen declined to comment. A phone number for her lawyer was unavailable.
