Scientists in the UK have created the world's first battery made entirely of Brussels sprouts, and are using the "sprout battery" to power lights for a Christmas tree in London.

The special battery uses 1,000 sprouts to generate about 60 volts.

Paul Jackson, from Engineering UK, says it's a popular alternative use for the much-maligned little green vegetable, but unlikely to solve the world's energy problems.

"We've needed 1,000 Brussels sprouts to power up the Christmas tree, so that's quite a lot of sprouts and quite a lot of electrodes to make this happen," he said.

"So we're not suggesting this is going to be a new opportunity to replace nuclear power or gas, but what we are showing is there are some different ways of thinking about things."

Mr Jackson says some farmers have offered to supply more sprouts to keep the battery running.

"I think the growers have been really impressed that the old Brussels sprout, which gets mixed press, has been seen literally in a new light, a Christmas light."

As seen in the picture (above), the battery was created using five power cells, each holding 200 sprouts.

Copper and zinc electrodes were placed in each sprout to create a chemical reaction between the electrodes, generating a current which is stored and used to power the LEDs on the tree.
