The State Government has backed down on proposed arson laws that had farmers fearing they could be jailed.

The Government's new arson laws had come under fire for putting farmers at risk of up to 21 years in prison if a burn off got out of control.

The Government had been adamant farmers who did the right thing would not be affected.

Now, the Emergency Management Minister, David O'Byrne, says he will sit down with the Farmers and Graziers Association and the Law Society to tweak the legislation.

"There may be some unintended consequences so we'll be working through those amendments," he said.

Mel King from the TFGA says the move is welcomed.

"We'd hate to have seen the legislation amendments go forward as they were," she said.

The government is hoping the amended arson laws will be passed during parliament's final sitting this month.
