Amanda Knox's former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, addresses a Florence courtroom and asks judges to give him back a real life.

Knox and Sollecito were convicted in 2009 of killing 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher in what was described as a drug-fuelled sexual assault.

An emotional Sollecito plead his innocence.

"As I said, I never knew Rudy Guede and I only knew Meredith a little bit. It doesn't make any sense that I would have had any interest in her that could have led to such an atrocious act, against a 20-year-old girl, it has no basis in reality. And this thing, unfortunately, is going on for too many years."

After winning an appeal in 2011 against their guilty verdicts, both Knox and Sollecito were freed from prison.

But the case is being tried again in Florence after Italy's supreme court overturned the acquittals in March, citing "contradictions and inconsistencies".

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) RAFFAELE SOLLECITO SAYING:

"I humbly request you to please look at the reality of this situation and to consider the immense wrong that has been done and to give me the reason to believe that for a person such as myself, an Italian like you, there is a possibility to have a life because at the moment I do not have a real life. This is what I ask of you and I thank you."

Outside the courtroom, Author And Journalist Barbie Nadeau says Sollecito's appearance in court can only help him.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR AND JOURNALIST, BARBIE NADEAU, SAYING:

"I think (Raffaele) Sollecito used an opportunity well in order to address this court, who has only heard negative information about his character, about his involvement in the crime. He was very emotional, the jury members, the judges were all paying close attention to what he had to say and this can only help him, it cannot hurt him in any way. It was, it gave voice to him."

Amanda Knox has said she would not be returning to Italy to attend the retrial.
