A former West Australian shearer has taken out the state's top regional teaching award.

Robert Carter is currently the course coordinator for wool classing at C. Y. O'Connor Institute and says he's humbled by the accolade.

Mr Carter picked up the 2013 teaching excellence award at the weekend and says it's great to be recognised for his life-long passion for the wool industry.

"I'm fairly fortunate. I'm in a fairly unique situation, that I've sort of pretty much done the full circle, so to speak, as from the teaching side of it and then in the industry, and then for the last seven years I've been back in the training part of it," he said.
