The cause of death is unknown, but the 71-year-old underwent a liver transplant earlier this year.

The influential rock pioneer began his career with the "Velvet Underground" in the 1960s.

The band was known for its collaborative work with artist Andy Warhol.

Reed went on to have a successful solo career, never giving up his love for the guitar.

His continued to write songs and perform on stage up to his death.
