The New South Wales Government says there will be less trucks on the road this harvest, despite a big crop expected in some areas.

The Government has relaxed the legal load limits for trucks delivering grain under its Grain Harvest Management Scheme which is due to be gazetted today.

Vice president of the Livestock and Bulk Carriers Association Jock Carter says the changes will allow farmers to load slightly more grain and will reduce the number of trips to the delivery site.

"You know, most people in the country would realise that loading at harvest and getting weights perfect is almost impossible, particularly given you don't have access to weigh bridges," he said.

"So what this scheme does is allow a little bit of tolerance in terms of getting some additional weight on at harvest time."

The Livestock and Bulk Carriers Association says it applauds the Government making the 'common sense' changes.

"There will be an additional three percent increase on Concessional Mass Limits (CML) weights for 25/26m B-Doubles and six-axle semi trailers, which equates to an additional 0.8 tonne and 0.2 tonnes (on the tri-axle groups) respectively."

NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay has welcomed the industry's support in making the changes happen.

"Under the new scheme, a typical 19 metre six-axle semi trailer will be able to operate at 44.6 tonnes rather than 42.5 tonnes when running at General Mass Limits(GML)," he said.
