Australian artist Flume has taken home his first ARIA Award and is leading the pack of nominees for the annual music awards.

The Australian artist behind Holdin On won 2013 ARIA producer of the year, at an event on Tuesday that announced the final nominees as well as the winners of the artisan and fine arts awards.

Accepting his award, Harley Streten, aka Flume, remembered the hard yards that went into his self-titled No 1 debut album.

"It's crazy for me because most of this record actually I wrote in my bedroom in my parents' house ... in hostels' dorm rooms and pubs and cafes," he said.

Flume is in the running for another seven ARIAs, including Album of the Year, Breakthrough Artist - Release, Best Male Artist, Best Dance Release, the publicly-voted categories Song of the Year, Best Australian Live Act and Best Video, with Joe Nappa picking up the nod for Holdin On.

With a potential total of eight awards, Flume leads the pack, closely followed by his competition for Album of the Year - Tame Impala with seven nominations; Birds of Tokyo and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds with six nods; and Guy Sebastian with five.

Empire of the Sun also received five nominations, while Matt Corby and Vance Joy have four nominations apiece.

Boy & Bear, who won five ARIA Awards in 2011, have been nominated for three this year - the same number as Paul Kelly, San Cisco and The Drones.

While those artists will need to wait another seven weeks until the 27th ARIA Awards to find out the result, Flume and the other six winners of the artisan and fine arts awards categories can celebrate early.

* The 2013 ARIA Awards are on December 1 at The Star Event Centre, Sydney.
