Singer-songwriter Katie Noonan is to be the new ambassador to promote the Adelaide Fringe festival.

She will take over from the festival's first official ambassador Paul McDermott.

Noonan now will have the job of spreading word about the Fringe festival to overseas and interstate audiences.

Fringe director Greg Clarke said he was delighted to have someone of Noonan's calibre to help promote the event.

"Katie Noonan is one of Australia's most versatile and talented singers and has had a long relationship with Adelaide Fringe over the last 14 years," he said.

"She is a true artist in every sense of the word and is a natural choice to be this year's Fringe ambassador.

"Adelaide audiences flock to see her whenever she is in town and as singer, songwriter, producer and a wonderfully generous and charismatic person. She is the perfect role model of a very successful Fringe artist."

Noonan will now make a national promotional tour and will perform at next year's festival.

"I've played at Adelaide Fringe almost every year since my first Fringe in 1999," the singer said.

"In my first year we did three shows at the East End Exchange Hotel with my band George. I remember sleeping on the floor with a host of fantastic carny (carnival) folk at a house we were all sharing whilst in town.

"I thought the Adelaide Fringe was this fantastical and truly wonderful world full of awesome folk. There is a beautiful sense of community at the Adelaide Fringe as well as a wonderful sense of discovery. There is an innate sense of open mind and heart."

The 2014 Fringe will be held from February 14-March 16.
