The Greens want to extend changes to South Australia's worker's compensation laws to volunteer firefighters to ensure they are also covered if they contract a range of cancers.

Greens MP Tammy Franks has introduced a private members bill to the SA parliament to ensure volunteers will not have to prove their illness was caused by their exposure to dangerous chemicals and fire hazards.

Earlier this month the state government announced it would regulate to have career firefighters automatically covered should they suffer from a range of cancers.

Workers' Rehabilitation Minister Jack Snelling said the onus of proof would no longer be on those who risked their lives for the safety of others.

"If a firefighter develops a specific cancer, they will be automatically covered under our workers' compensation scheme," Mr Snelling said at the time.

Conditions covered under the new arrangements include primary site, brain, bladder, breast and kidney cancers, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.

Mr Snelling said the government would take further advice on whether to extend the scheme to volunteer firefighters.

But Ms Franks said the Greens' bill would give a fair go to all firefighters who regularly put their lives on the line for the benefit of the entire community.

"The carcinogens won't discriminate between an unpaid or a paid firefighter and neither should we," she said.
