The state Minister for Regional Infrastructure Andrew Stoner is urging Newcastle Council to put in an application for the next round of funding under the Resources for Regions scheme.

Despite being eligible for the last round of $42 million worth of projects, Newcastle failed to put in an application.

Almost $17 million was yesterday awarded to projects in Muswellbrook and Singleton.

Mr Stoner says Newcastle should not waste the next opportunity to apply for funds.

"Look I'd be urging Newcastle to get on board for round two," he said.

"This is the biggest amount of money we've had yet for Resources for Regions, nearly $80 million.

"But they do need to do their homework, they do need to meet the deadlines and put forward worthwhile proposals on behalf of their community."
