VOICE OVER SCRIPT

LORINDA BAILEY HAD NO COMMENT TO REPORTERS AS SHE MADE HER FIRST APPEARANCE IN COURT ON TUESDAY.

SHE AND WAYNE SPERLING -- ARE FACING FELONY CHILD ABUSE CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY KEEPING THEIR FOUR YOUNG BOYS IN FILTHY CONDITIONS IN THEIR APARTMENT.

POLICE FOUND THREE OF THE BOYS THERE LAST MONTH -- WHILE A FOURTH WAS BEING TREATED IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER A FALL.

THEY'VE ALL BEEN PLACED IN PROTECTIVE CUSTODY.

SOUNDBITE: (English) David Allen, Neighbor

"The carpet was soaked with cat feces and urine. When we had reported them, there were over five hundred live flies in that apartment. The beds were soaked with urine. The kids were all filthy in diapers...ages two to six....they had almost no verbal skills".

THE COUPLE HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO A CHILD ABUSE CHARGE BEFORE INVOLVING THREE OTHER CHILDREN

THEY WERE PLACED ON PROBATION in 2006 AND THOSE CHILDREN PLACED WITH A CHILD SERVICES AGENCY.

LAST YEAR, POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE HOME AFTER CHILDREN WERE REPORTED HANGING OUT THE WINDOW.

A NEIGHBOR SAYS THE CHILDREN WERE REMOVED FOR THE HOME FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.

SOUNDBITE: David Littman: Works in the Neighborhood

"They came back, and we saw less and less of them. They had been allowed out, previously in a little sidewalk area in the front of their apartment."

BAILEY --- FREE ON BOND ---HAS DENIED THE APARTMENT IS UNSAFE, AND SHE SAYS THE BOYS ARE NOT DEVELOPMENTLY DISABLED.

HOSPITAL EXAMS SHOW THE FOUR BOYS WERE MALNOURISHED AND NONVERBAL.
