A Tweed councillor says insurance companies are using the shire's new flood management plan to push up premiums for local residents.
Councillor Phil Youngblutt says the latest flood-frequency maps show where major flooding would occur in a one-in-100-year event.
He says the new plan overstates the threat, and insurance companies are taking advantage of the situation.
"This is just nonsense and I believe that the insurance companies have taken advantage of the alarmist language in some of these documents and pushed the premiums up beyond anything,Cr Youngblutt said.
"In fact some of the premiums that are coming in now are just extraordinary.
"One person who rang me yesterday had his premium lifted up to $38,000 for his house and contents, and it's just absolute nonsense.
