ROUGH CUT (No reporter narration)
U. S. President Barack Obama said on Friday (October 4), the fourth day of the government shutdown, he is open to negotiations with Republicans but added that "we can't do it with a gun held to the head of the American people."
Accompanied by Vice President Joe Biden, Obama made his remarks during a lunch time visit to a local sandwich shop offering 10 percent discounts to furloughed workers.
"This shutdown could be over today. We know there are the votes for it in the House of Representatives. If Speaker (John) Boehner would allow this vote to take place, we could end this shutdown," Obama told reporters.
