The firefighters' union says Broken Hill is being "dudded" by only have one station open at times because of staff shortages.

The South Broken Fire Station has closed several times this year, leaving only the Central station to cover the city.

Greg Matthews from the Fire Brigade Employees Union says the station is going off-line too often because of staff shortages..

"The community of Broken Hill is being dudded with only having one fire station at times when there are shortages," he said.

"There's an expectation in this day and age that if you've got a fire station there you've actually got firefighters to crew it and respond out of that station.

"Broken Hill requires two fire stations because of the layout of the city and it's important that each other have backup and that's the main reason for the stations there and it's got to be maintained on a 24-hour basis."

NSW Fire and Rescue Chief Superintendent Neil Harris says when the South station closes the fire engine is moved to the Central station.

"So we don't reduce our fire capability at all but those who are available during the day at South they are able to respond in their own private vehicles to the fire call," Chief Supt Harris said.

"They take their uniform.

"They respond and they can use all the equipment on those three fire engines that respond to the incident."

Chief Supt Harris says the fire brigade is committed to keeping both fire stations open.

He encourages people interested in joining as a part-time firefighter to call the local station or visit the service's for more information.

"We teach people advanced first aid," he said.

"We teach people to work in confined spaces, to work on roofs, how to wear the breathing apparatus.

"We teach them to work closely a team. They also get a lot of self-satisfaction out of working with their community."
