Celebrations and commiserations continued into the night in Fremantle after 40,000 fans packed the streets to watch yesterday's grand final.

And the party's not yet over despite Fremantle's loss to Hawthorn, with thousands of fans expected to attend a welcome home ceremony for the Dockers at Subiaco Oval this afternoon.

Police say there was little trouble from the bigger than expected crowd in Fremantle.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt says the atmosphere remained family friendly.

He says the event provided a much needed boost to the area.

"There's been more attention on Freo in the last fortnight than there has been in the last 20 years and I think it's been fantastic for the city," he said.
