WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says Vice President Joe Biden has discussed a new round of peace talks over ethnically divided Cyprus with President Nicos Anastasiades .

Biden and the Cyprian president met Friday at the White House ahead of next month's resumption of talks after an 18-month lull. The White House says the two agreed a new impetus for the talks is needed.

Biden told Anastasiades the U. S. remains committed to a re-unified Cyprus as a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation. Biden also promoted the possibility to expand cooperation among Mediterranean countries and thanked Cyprus for its partnership on regional stability.

Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Turkish Cypriots declared an independent northern state in 1983, recognized only by Turkey.
