CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan authorities say they have arrested seven more people — including a National Guard lieutenant colonel — in connection with the seizure of 1.4 tons of cocaine smuggled to Paris on a flight from Caracas.
The Attorney General's office said Tuesday in a statement that five were National Guard officers and two civilians who worked at the Caracas airport.
The arrests bring to 16 the number of people being held in Venezuela and France, including two Venezuelan National Guard lieutenants and five sergeants.
The Paris prosecutor's office has said that six of the people were arrested in France, and that none were French citizens.
Officials say the drug was shipped on Sept. 10 in 31 suitcases bearing luggage tags with fake names.
