The murder of an anti-racist rap musician by an man said to be a sympathiser of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party has sparked a huge outcry.

On Thursday thousands took to the streets in an Athens suburb in protest.

"We want to put an end of this Nazi story of hate and murder. This is the only way to stop them. We don't believe the government, through legal ways, can outlaw Golden Dawn. They can't do it."

The government appears to disagree.

It says Golden Dawn supporters have been involved in a series of attacks over the past two years.

Now it's calling on judges to act against the party as a criminal organisation and a threat to public safety.

Golden Dawn's leader on Thursday sought to distance the party from the violence.

"Golden Dawn has said that it condemns this specific tragic event and others. It condemns every act of violence. But this is not enough for the holy inquisition of Greece 2013, of this bail-out government. They should know they won't succeed in their plans."

The funeral for the dead musician Pavlos Fissas took place on Thursday.

He was stabbed in a brawl after a soccer match shown on tv at a cafe in Athens two days earlier.

Police said a 45-year-old man's been arrested and had admitted the killing.

He was due to appear in court on Saturday.
